JAMES DEAN®

1931-1955

His name is synonymous with legend, but when the trio of movies he made is East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause and Giant, all filmed in just over a year, the legend is justified.

Flush from the success of his first film, East of Eden, James celebrated by buying a Porsche Speedster and promptly began entering races across southern California. Like other legendary actors of his era (think Paul Newman and Steve McQueen), he loved speed and the motorcycles and cars that delivered it. Once Giant wrapped, he upgraded to a Porsche Spyder and, just weeks later, was tragically killed in a highway accident while driving it to its first race – only days before the release of Giant. He was just 24-years old.

Nominated for Academy Awards for two of his three movies, James’ real legacy is as an icon of youth culture. Perhaps nowhere in film history has an actor so personified the characters he played on screen.

Jett Rink Ranch Coat, Edition II

A faithful recreation of what James Dean wore as Jett Rink in the Academy Award-winning movie Giant, this coat has already received numerous accolades.

"Dream come true." – Los Angeles Times
"Remarkably rakish...Entirely brilliant." – The Rake
"Worth every penny." – Men's File

Giant Cowboy Boots

These are the boots James wore in Giant.

Thanks to his cousin in Fairmount, Indiana (James’ hometown), we were able to study the originals and then track down the same bootmaker in Arizona – still in business – that happened to have the very same pattern and last in their archives. These are the real McCoys.

Marfa Denim Workshirt

Playing the iconoclastic character of Jett Rink was not too much of a stretch for James, and the ranch-style wardrobe in particular suited his personal style, which he could be seen wearing on and off set throughout production of Giant. With the movie plot spanning over 25 years the clothes needed to reflect the period, but the denim shirt seen here is completely timeless – the only indication of period being the pocket watch pocket on the left chest.

Quarter-Stripe Camera Shirt | Red

During the two-month long filming of the epic movie Giant, James would walk around the set on the enormous ranch (one and a half times the size of Manhattan) near Marfa, Texas and indulge in his hobby of photography. Not surprisingly, while he was doing this – despite the blazing sun and record heat – he himself was photographed and this is the shirt he favored.

3-Stripe Racing Tee

In May of 1955, just before leaving to Texas for the summer to shoot Giant, James entered his Porsche 356 Super Speedster in the amateur Santa Barbara Road Race but had to withdraw midway after blowing his engine (he started at 18th position and moved up to 4th in just five laps). With time on his hands, he walked around the paddocks admiring the various race cars and talking to their owners. With the exception of a helmet and gloves while behind the wheel, this T-shirt paired with jeans and boots – his signature, effortlessly cool style – is all he wore for racing.
